A privately managed woodland creation project dedicated to restoring biodiversity, planting native trees and creating a thriving landscape for wildlife that will continue to develop for generations to come.
Situated on approximately five acres at Blackquarries Hill near Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, this project aims to transform former agricultural land into a diverse native woodland that will support wildlife, increase biodiversity and become an attractive landscape for future generations.
Rather than creating a dense plantation, the vision is to establish a varied landscape of native woodland, hedgerows, open glades and wildflower areas, encouraging nature to develop naturally alongside carefully managed planting.
Native Woodland Wildlife Habitat Biodiversity Long-term ConservationThe name Blackquarries Hill reflects the area's long geological history. For centuries, small limestone quarries on the escarpment supplied building stone for the surrounding villages, leaving a landscape shaped by both nature and people.
The ridge is also home to archaeological features dating back thousands of years, demonstrating that this landscape has been valued and used by people since prehistoric times.
Today the old quarry landscape provides an ideal setting for creating new native woodland that will become part of the continuing history of Blackquarries Hill.
Create a peaceful, wildlife-rich native woodland that will continue to mature for future generations.
Record soils, drainage, existing hedgerows, wildlife, access and seasonal changes before development begins.
Create a varied landscape using woodland groves, open glades, hedgerows and woodland edges rather than planting every square metre.
Introduce native tree and shrub species while encouraging natural regeneration wherever possible.
Monitor woodland health, replace failed trees, encourage biodiversity and manage the woodland for the long term.
2026 — Purchase of the land and development of the woodland vision.
Years 1–2 — Surveys, planning, first planting and habitat creation.
